Non-GAAP Information

In addition to disclosing results determined in accordance with GAAP, CMS may also disclose certain non-GAAP and pro forma non-GAAP results of operations, including net income, earnings per share, and operating income that make certain adjustments or exclude certain charges and gains that are outlined in the schedules included in this website. CMS provides historical financial results on both a GAAP and non-GAAP basis. Management views adjusted earnings as a key measure of the company’s present operating financial performance and uses adjusted earnings for external communications with analysts and investors. Internally, the company uses adjusted earnings to measure and assess performance. Adjustments could include items such as discontinued operations, asset sales, impairments, restructuring costs, regulatory items from prior years, or other items. Because the company is not able to estimate the impact of specific line items, which have the potential to significantly impact, favorably or unfavorably, the company’s reported earnings in future periods, the company is not providing reported earnings guidance nor is it providing a reconciliation for the comparable future period earnings.

CMS and Virtua also take no responsibility for third party pricing data provided for informational purposes and certain ratio results formulated from the provided third party pricing data. The non-GAAP information is not prepared in accordance with GAAP and may not be comparable to non-GAAP information used by other companies. The non-GAAP information should be considered supplemental information to assist in fully understanding our business results, rather than as a substitute for the reported earnings.

A reconciliation of each of these non-GAAP measures to the most directly comparable GAAP measure is included as a separate link and also posted on the CMS website at www.cmsenergy.com.

Consumers Energy Boosts Energy Value And Provides $7.3 Million In Energy Efficiency Incentives To Commercial And Industrial Customers In The Fourth Quarter Of 2012 And Exceeds Year-End Goals

Mar 11, 2013

JACKSON, Mich., March 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers Energy's Business Solutions program awarded $7.3 million in incentives in the fourth quarter of 2012 to help Michigan commercial and industrial customers become more energy efficient.

Statewide, these projects are saving the 1,695 participating customers an estimated $9.5 million in energy costs each year.  The annual energy savings are:  71.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and more than 236,500 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas.

That's enough energy saved to serve nearly 8,700 residential electric customers and about 2,800 residential natural gas customers.

In 2012, Consumers Energy awarded $17.4 million in incentives for energy efficiency measures, saving the participating customers about $20.8 million in energy costs each year. The total annual energy savings for customers are 151.4 million kWh and 594,000 Mcf of natural gas. That exceeds Consumers Energy's Business Solutions goal for 2012, which was to work with customers and help them save 147 million kWh and 547,000 Mcf.

Business Solutions is Consumers Energy's energy efficiency program for commercial and industrial customers.  It is part of the company's comprehensive energy efficiency program, which was launched to help customers save energy and save money and meet the aggressive standards set in the 2008 energy law.

"Working with customers to help them become more energy efficient and save money is part of Consumers Energy's promise to Michigan. These incentives are part of our promise to provide long-term value to our customers," said Fred Alatalo, the utility's business energy efficiency operations director. "The Business Solutions program helps our business customers reach their goals of becoming more energy efficient and reducing their operating expenses.  By working with customers and providing these incentives to help them lower their costs, we're helping many Michigan businesses strengthen their competitive position."

A recent Consumers Energy webinar provided details on how commercial and industrial customers may participate in the Business Solutions program. The webinar is archived on the company's website and those interested in viewing or downloading the hour-long presentation may find it at www.consumersenergy.com/business.
